Caravan

IT TOOK ANOTHER WEEK of hard riding to reach Grand Junction. As I approached, I saw a double line of tractor trailers pulling into a large open area. I had never seen an internal combustion vehicle in operation and here were 24 of them. There were two tanker trailers and 20 double trailers, which all had windows.

There was a large crowd of local people on horseback and buggy's following the caravan, and I joined them.

I spent the afternoon walking around, talking to both locals and some of the caravan inhabitants. I learned that the group had leased the abandoned field to grow a crop of hemp. They used pressed hemp seed oil to power their trucks and planned to spend the summer growing and harvesting their crop.

I camped that night beside one truck after asking permission from the head of one family. Martin Tucker invited me to join his family for supper that night. He and his wife Sara, lived in one half of the 40-foot trailer overlooking my tent. The side of the trailer folded down to form a deck. A folding table completed the outdoor dining room. I insisted on bringing a bottle of hard apple cider, which we enjoyed together.

They explained that they were farmers in the mid-west before the crash and had grown hemp as the availability of diesel went away. Growing hemp was still against the law, but enforcement was non-existent by then. As the growing season became shorter and shorter, the markets for their crops and livestock became unworkable, and the flow of desperate people fleeing the cities looked like it would become a flood. The Tuckers and some of their friends and neighbors thought about alternatives.

While oil based fuel was not available, the hemp seed oil gave this group options. After much discussion, the survivors of the plague developed a plan to form a caravan and move west toward a safer environment. It took two years to assemble the caravan, and another year to reach Grand Junction. Each of the 40 foot trailers held two families and all their possessions necessary to start a new life in the west.

Their experience passing through the Denver area was not pleasant. Although most of the city was in ruins, they encountered two different gangs that only retreated after being decimated by the caravan's gunfire. The passage over the mountains in early spring had also been difficult.

The next day I met the leader of the Caravan, Roger Vincent. His father had been the original leader, but died in the second battle with the Denver gangs. We talked for an hour, and he asked if I wanted to join them, since he saw the gun on my belt and the fact that my bike would be my transport and a good vehicle for scouting ahead of the caravan.

I thought about the potential problems if I offered my fertility counseling services to the childless couples in the caravan and asked Roger about it. He considered it for a minute and said.
